UT Tyler Group Presents International Patriots Day
Inaugural International Patriots Day was celebrated on Nov. 10 in The University of Texas Tyler’s University Center. The International Patriots at UT Tyler student organization sponsored the event.
The purpose of the celebration was to share world culture with others, as well as to educate about various cultures, according to senior Julien Bataillard of France, the historian of the International Patriots organization. Approximately 40 countries are represented at UT Tyler.
Members provided as many visual aids and text from their countries as possible. The displays featured items like clothes, games, print media, foods and interior/exterior ornaments representing their culture. International club members were available to answer students’ questions about the various cultures on exhibit.
Graduate student Yi Wang from China was translating students’ names into Chinese characters. Senior Jessica Mai from Vietnam posed in a traditional high school student’s graduation dress. Faculty sponsor Dr. Marianthi Coroneou, who is of Greek descent, wore her volunteer uniform from the 2004 Olympic Games held in Greece.
Interesting facts added to the event. For example, the old American pastime Rubik’s cube was designed by a Hungarian.
All international students are automatically members of the International Patriots at UT Tyler organization. There are no fees involved. If interested please contact Dr. Coroneou in the literature and languages department, 903.534.0916.
