Students and Faculty Participate in UT-LSAMP Conference
UT Tyler students and faculty members participated in the 2004 University of Texas System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (UT-LSAMP) annual conference.
During the event held Sept. 22-25 at UT El Paso, selected students presented their undergraduate research from the UT-LSAMP funded Summer Research Academy. All UT System component institutions were represented.
Students presented their work using oral or poster presentation formats. Oral and poster presentations in mathematics/sciences or engineering/computer science categories competed for monetary awards.
Posters were presented by UT Tyler students Danijela Stojanovic (chemistry) and Jesse James (biology). The oral presentation from mathematics student Ben McCarty earned a third place finish in the mathematics/sciences category.
Dr. Jeffrey Mountain, associate professor of mechanical engineering, accompanied the student group and served as a judge for the engineering/computer science oral and poster sessions. Additionally, Dr. Stephen Rainwater, associate professor of computer science attended as director of the UT Tyler LSAMP program.
During the Summer Research Academy, Dr. Brian Taylor (chemistry), Dr. Darrell Pogue (biology) and Drs. Casey Mann and Jennifer McLoud (mathematics) served as mentors for these students.
The UT-LSAMP program provides undergraduate research experiences in an effort to increase the number of minority, women and economically disadvantaged students in graduate level Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs.
