In
the Spotlight
An article written by Drs. Amy Stevens Griffith, Dept.
of ECRSE , and Peggy B. Gill, Department of Education Leadership
and Policy Studies, has been accepted by The Journal of At-Risk
Issues. Titled “Narrative Story: Including Student Voice
in the Design Process,’’ it will be printed in winter
2005.
Gary C. Hatcher, associate professor and art chair, has
authored numerous scholarly and technical articles published this
past year. He also served as magazine guest editor, had publications
feature his work in both the United States and Australia, conducted
workshops and participated in more than 10 exhibitions of his ceramic
art.
Hatcher served as guest editor for The Studio Potter,
http://studiopotter.org/, Vol. 31, No. 2, collecting manuscripts
focused around his chosen topic, “Mentorship.” The
processes of mentorship in ceramic art education were examined
with articles collected from other scholars and ceramic artists.
The late English educator and ceramic artist Michael Casson was
the focus of an article written by Hatcher, also appearing in The
Studio Potter, Vol. 32, No. 2.
Hatcher had an article published in the Australian magazine Ceramics
Technical, http://www.ceramicart.com.au, titled “The
Bourry Box Kiln: Past and Present,” which examined the
technical use and aesthetic issues of the traditional kiln designed
by Frenchman, Emil Bourry.
In the peer-reviewed journal published in August for the National
Council on the Education in Ceramic Arts, http://www.nceca.net/,
an essay titled, “The Arts and Crafts
Movement, Mingei and Social Conscience”, written by Hatcher,
was published contrasting the Arts and Crafts Movement of William
Morris and others with the Mingei movement of Japan.
Hatcher and his wife Daphne Roehr Hatcher, who is also a ceramic
artist, were the focus of an article written by Joyce Michaud in Ceramics
Monthly, February 2004 issue. The magazine dedicated eight
full-color pages to the couple, with Gary C. Hatcher’s work
appearing on the cover.
In addition to publications, Hatcher has participated in nine
invitational exhibitions and two juried exhibitions in venues located
in Louisville, Kentucky, Tempe, Arizona and St. Louis, Missouri,
among others.
He has also conducted workshops for students at Southwestern University
in Georgetown and at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland.
