Kathy Kapka, director of audit services, has been elected as secretary/treasurer of the East Texas Chapter of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants for 2005-06.

Dr. Lindsay Wells, chair and associate professor of mechanical engineering, and Mr. Robin Hood, master of engineering May 2004, co-authored a paper titled "A Computer Simulation for Teaching the Principles of Lean Manufacturing" that was published in the Conference Proceedings and presented at the 12th International Conference on Concurrent Engineering held July 25 – 29 in Fort Worth. Concurrent engineering is a systematic approach to the design of products and related processes which includes consideration of manufacture and support. The approach is to cause designers and engineers to consider from the outset all the elements of product life-cycle, from concept through disposal including, for example, quality, cost, production scheduling and user requirements. Engineers, managers and researchers from throughout the world attended the conference.

Dr. Fredericka Brown , assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and Dr. Leonard Brown, assistant professor of computer science, recently published a paper titled "Improving the Clinical Applicability of a Non-Invasive Perfusion Determination Technique" in the proceedings of the International Conference on Data Management for Real-Life Problems in Biomedicine. The conference was held June 27 – 30 at National University in San Diego, Calif.

In addition, Dr. Leornard Brown published a paper with Padmaja Dukkipati, a graduate student in the computer science department, titled "Improving the Recognition of Geometrical Shapes in Road Signs by Augmenting the Database." The paper was in the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Computer Science and its Applications, which was held June 27 – 30 at National University. Dr. Brown attended and presented both papers.

Dr. Arun Kulkarni , professor of computer science, presented a keynote address titled “Data Mining and Fuzzy Neural Systems” at The 3rd International Conference on Computing, Communication and Control Technologies July 24 – 27 in Austin. He also presented a paper titled “Knowledge Discovery Using Fuzzy Neural Network Models” at the conference. The paper has been published in the proceedings of the conference.

Dan Murphree , assistant professor of history, has been invited to present a paper titled "Settling Florida's Atlantic Borderlands: Subalterns, Immigrants and Transnational Identity, 1564-1573" at the Fifth Annual British Group in Early American History Conference, which will be held Sept. 9-11 at Clare College, University of Cambridge (United Kingdom).
