Patriot Softball Plays First-Ever Game

softball pitcherThe Patriot Softball team played their first-ever season game against Northwood University Sunday.

President Rodney Mabry threw the first pitch, Dr. Dale Lunsford, vice president of external relations and student affairs, threw a second pitch with a curve on it, and Howard Patterson, athletic director and dean of student affairs threw a mean third pitch to start off the season. More>>>

Sutton Joins Student Development

SuttonMindy Sutton is the new student development specialist at UT Tyler. She is responsible for implementing and monitoring Greek life, but will also assist with student organizations, and advising student government association. More>>>

Debate Team Places Second at Statewide Event

The UT Tyler debate team placed second in debate sweepstakes competition at the Texas Intercollegiate Forensic Association Spring Tournament, Dr. Jeffrey Hobbs, associate professor of speech communication, announced.

Sixteen universities and colleges from across the state participated in the tournament, held Feb. 4-6 in San Antonio. Schools of all sizes compete against each other in the annual event. More>>>

Engineering Department Hosts MATHCOUNTS for Middle School Students

math studentNine surrounding middle schools visited UT Tyler last Wednesday to participate in MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide program that promotes math excellence for 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade students and combines efforts of education, business, government and the technological community. More>>>

Women Mathematicians

Five female mathematics majors from UT Tyler attended the 7 th annual Nebraska Conference for undergraduate women in mathematics in Lincoln, Neb. earlier this month.

The conference informs female math majors of various undergraduate research and graduate schools. It included a series of lectures, workshops, and professionals in mathematics, which updated over 150 undergraduate women from all over the country about their opportunities as a woman in the math world. Ward Acquires Orientation

Ashley WardAshley Ward is now the interim coordinator of UT Tyler’s orientation. Freshman orientation was previously coordinated by Shaune Martinez, who resigned earlier this month.

Nursing Students to Study Abroad in Guatemala

Nine undergraduate nursing students, four nurse practitioner graduate students, and three nursing faculty are traveling to Guatemala at the end of this month to participate in a medical mission in San Raymundo.

The students will work in a clinic and assist in an operating room for five days where they are expecting to see 1,000 patients and care for an additional 40 surgery patients. More>>>

Freshman and Seniors Participate in National Survey

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) will be emailed to every freshman and senior to determine what kind of college experience UT Tyler students are receiving.

Questions will focus on how and where students spend their time, the nature and quality of their interactions with faculty members and peers, and what they have gained from their classes and other aspects of their college experience. More>>>

Dillard’s visual merchandiser Julianne and manager Tim Knight demonstrated and provided examples of men’s and women’s professional dress for interviews and casual dress in the workplace. The event was part of UT Tyler’s Career Success Seminar.

 

UT Tyler Staff Discovers the Magic of the Jungle

Suzan Burgett, training coordinator for The University of Texas Health Center, discusses personalities with animal characteristics and how to deal with different animals that can be encountered in the “jungle” with UT Tyler staff members last Thursday and Friday at the annual staff development workshop. The workshop was sponsored by The University Staff Advisory Council and President Mabry.
