| Engineering Department Hosts MATHCOUNTS for Middle School Students
Nine surrounding middle schools visited UT Tyler last Wednesday to participate in MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide program that promotes math excellence for 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade students and combines efforts of education, business, government and the technological community.
The East Texas chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) sponsored the regional competition, and UT Tyler’s engineering department served as a host, with the engineering students in their largest service activity acting as proctors.
“You are the future of our economy. You will be inventing and running the technology in the future, and we are so glad you are here showing an interest in math,” said Troy Henson, dean of the college of engineering.
Each school pre-selects math students to compete in teams consisting of four students or as individuals. These students take a series of three tests to determine which two teams and two individuals will advance to the state level in Austin, Texas. Top teams from the state competition then move on to the national competition sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) in Washington, D. C.
Over 3,000 students at 300 schools in 25 chapters in the state of Texas participate in MATHCOUNTS. The program teaches students to use higher thinking skills, and teaches them that math is fun and essential.
