| Sutton Joins Student Development
Mindy Sutton is the new student development specialist at UT Tyler. She is responsible for implementing and monitoring Greek life, but will also assist with student organizations, and advising student government association.
“Mindy brings to UT Tyler excellent credentials and a commitment to develop Greek life consistent with our campus values of high academic standards and quality student life programs,” said Dr. Dale Lunsford, vice president of student affairs and external relations.
Sutton holds a bachelor of arts degree in public relations from Southern Methodist University, and a master of science degree in education from Indiana University.
After receiving her bachelor’s, Sutton was a national advisor for her sorority and collegiate honor society. She then worked with student organizations and leadership groups at Indiana University during graduate school. After graduation, Sutton advised Greek, leadership and student organizations at The University of Houston and Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
“I have been spending time familiarizing myself with the processes of UT Tyler and working on policies and procedures for the upcoming Greek system. The next step is a selection committee,” said Sutton. This committee will be composed of faculty, staff, students, and possibly community members, and will determine which groups colonize at the University. National governing bodies of fraternities and sororities will also be informed so interested groups can visit and make presentations to the committee.
The initial goal is to yield two North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) fraternities, two National Panhellenic Council (NPC) sororities and one fraternity and sorority from the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). The first fraternities and sororities could arrive on campus as early as fall 2005, said Sutton.
Sutton encourages suggestions and concerns regarding greek life and student organizations, is located in UC 111 and can be reached 903-565-5651.
