Debate Team Places Second at Statewide Event

The UT Tyler debate team placed second in debate sweepstakes competition at the Texas Intercollegiate Forensic Association Spring Tournament, Dr. Jeffrey Hobbs, associate professor of speech communication, announced.

Sixteen universities and colleges from across the state participated in the tournament, held Feb. 4-6 in San Antonio. Schools of all sizes compete against each other in the annual event.

UT Tyler has placed second in the TIFA spring tournament debate sweepstakes for two consecutive years, Dr. Hobbs said. “It was wonderful to attend an important tournament and have every member of the team do well,’’ he said of this year’s event. “The team seemed to sense the importance of the state tournament and rose to the occasion. As always, I was proud of their performance.’’

The team of Noah Conklin and Sean Dodd placed third in open parliamentary debate. Dodd received the first-place speaker award based on quality points received during the preliminary rounds of competition. Conklin was the second-place speaker.

The team of Grant McKnight and Ryan Palmquist reached the quarter-final round in open parliamentary debate. Both McKnight and Palmquist were selected to the Texas All State Forensics Team based on their performance throughout the year.

In addition, the team of Darci Meadville and Aaron Presley placed second in the novice division of parliamentary debate.
