In the Spotlight

Mark Humphries, a graduate research assistant in the master of engineering program with an emphasis in electrical engineering, made a presentation at the Texas Instruments headquarters in Dallas on Dec. 17. The presentation focused on the TI OMAP (Open Multimedia Applications Platform) project Humphries has worked on since August with Dr. Mukul Shirvaikar, associate professor of electrical engineering.

The project involves the development of laboratory curriculum for the TI OMAP 5912 dual-core processor chip, used widely in handheld devices like cell phones. UT Tyler is one of the first universities to be working on the OMAP 5912 platform.

The electrical engineering department is offering a pilot lab as part of a senior elective course in real-time systems this spring. TI expects to disseminate the instructional resources developed and tested in this course to other universities and industry partners.

Dr. Mark Johnson, assistant professor of music, took part in a Hawaii State Day national-level, invited professional performance at the Washington National Cathedral on Jan. 9. Dr. Johnson participated as a soloist/section leader with the Chancel Choir of Christ Episcopal Church of Tyler. The special service honored the people of Hawaii.
