Theatre Nominated for Kennedy Center Awards
The UT Tyler student repertory acting company has been chosen to present its production of “Vincent in Brixton’’ at the Region VI Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in February, Dr. James Hatfield, UT Tyler director of theatre, announced.
UT Tyler was selected to participate in the regional festival after winning both the Critic’s Choice and Director’s Choice awards at the state level. UT Tyler will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 25 at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ark., the Region VI festival host site.
Nine UT Tyler student actors were nominated to participate in the festival’s Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships competition. The nominees will perform scenes in the preliminary rounds of the regional competition beginning Feb. 22. They include: Connie Orr and Geanina Barna, nominated for their performance in “Seascape’’; Sara Jenkins and John Bradley Hardin, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’’; Kyle Halberstadt, Diana McBurrnet and Chris Taylor, “Vincent in Brixton’’; and Amanda Jo Campbell and Kaitlen O’Maine, “Evening of Scenes.’’
The Kennedy Center ACTF, a national theatre program involving 18,000 college and university students, recognizes outstanding work produced in university and college theatre. The Kennedy Center selection team will attend all eight regional festivals and select productions to be presented in April in Washington, D.C. Region VI includes Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
The Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships competition provides recognition, honor and financial assistance to outstanding student performers. Each competitor must first be nominated from a participating or associate theatre production by an adjudicator or director before receiving an official nomination. Nominees continue in regional and national competition for performance scholarships funded by the bequest of actress Irene Ryan, who is best remembered for her role as “Granny’’ in the “Beverly Hillbillies.’’
