‘From Plato to Potter’ Conference March 26
The UT Tyler College of Arts and Sciences will sponsor “From Plato to Potter,’’ a conference on classical, medieval and renaissance studies Saturday, March 26, Dr. Donna Dickerson, dean, announced.
Open to the public, the conference will be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the UT Tyler Cowan Center. There will be no registration fee.
The event is intended to bring together students, faculty and the local community to discuss a range of issues concerning the classical, medieval and renaissance periods and their continuing importance.
The plenary speaker will be Dr. John Kirby, professor of classics at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. Presentations will be made by students and scholars from UT Tyler and other schools including Southern Methodist University, Dallas, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Ill.
“As the title suggests, the conference will look at works from antiquity to the present, especially focusing on the influence of the past on the present, but also looking at artistic, literary and dramatic works in the context of their own time,’’ said Dr. Victor Scherb, chair of the Department of Literature and Languages.
There will be 10 sessions of scholarly papers, a display of medieval arms and clothing, a performance by the Tyler Brass Quintet, a choral concert led by Dr. Thomas Allen and a reader’s theatre presentation of Wit and Science, an allegorical drama about education first performed in the 1530s.
UT Tyler’s new Center for Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies will be discussed. Information also will be provided about two interdisciplinary minors and a scholarship program established for the study of early historical periods at UT Tyler. Students may select a minor in classical studies or in medieval and renaissance studies to satisfy bachelor’s degree requirements in any major that requires a minor.
