| Former UT Tyler Faculty Member to Speak at Sonya Kovalevsky Day
Dr. Evelyn Granville will be the keynote speaker at Sonya Kovalevsky Day hosted by the UT Tyler math department. Granville is a former UT Tyler faculty member and one of the first African-American women to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics.
This day celebrates the life and influential work of Sonya Kovalevsky, the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics. The event will take place Thursday, March 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the UT Tyler Library.
Other speakers include UT Tyler math and engineering professors and graduate and undergraduate students.
Local high school girls from public, private and home schools, especially juniors and seniors, and their teachers are invited to learn about mathematics, its applications and the rich history of women’s involvement in mathematics.
“Generally women are underrepresented in mathematically-oriented careers. We want to encourage girls to become interested in math and pursue an education and career in it,” said Dr. Ramona Ranalli, assistant professor in mathematics.
Participants must be part of a school group and have a sponsoring teacher. Parents of girls who are home-schooled can register as the sponsoring teacher.
Sponsoring teachers can register their students online at http://math.uttyler.edu/ranalli/SKDay/index.htm or the registration form can be printed and mailed. Both forms of registrations will receive mail confirmations about where to pick up name tags and lunch tickets.
Participants may compete in two contests. A trivia quiz will be given about the life of Sonya Kovalevsky and a problem-solving competition can be entered individually or in groups of up to five. These problems will be posted on the website and solutions must be received by March 4 in order to be eligible for prizes. Prizes for both competitions will be awarded throughout the day.
The event is sponsored by UT Tyler’s Association of Women in Mathematics and the National Security Agency.
