University Forms National Society of Black Engineers Chapter

UT Tyler has established a chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, Dr. Troy Henson, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, announced.
With more than 270 chapters on college and university campuses and 150 alumni extension and pre-college chapters, NSBE’s mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.
UT Tyler engineering students initiated and managed the creation of the chapter, Dr. Henson said. “We are very proud of all these students, who cover the spectrum from freshman to graduate student and are all performing at a high level academically.’’
Objectives of the UT Tyler chapter are to stimulate and develop student interest in engineering disciplines, increase the number of minority students in engineering, encourage members to seek advanced degrees, promote public awareness of engineering opportunities for minorities and function as a representative body on issues and developments that affect the careers of black engineers.
Kassim Abdul-Rahman of Garland, a graduate student in electrical engineering, is president of the UT Tyler chapter. Other officers are Maurice Smith of Tyler, electrical engineering junior, vice president; Kasey Buggs of Lake Dallas, electrical engineering freshman, secretary; and Kodjo Fia of Tyler, electrical engineering sophomore, treasurer. Dr. Fredericka Brown, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, is the chapter adviser.
