| UT Tyler Students Place in Semi-Final Round at Voice Competition
Elise Leung and Matthew Smith, two voice performance students, placed in the semi-final round at the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter auditions of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition, Dr. Mark Johnson, UT Tyler assistant professor of music, announced.
Smith went on to win top prize in the freshman men category.
“It is worth noting that our UT Tyler students distinguish themselves among a field of players that include music school powerhouses such as Baylor, the University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University. This is the second year one of our students has placed in semi-finals and the first year one of our students advanced and won his division,” said Dr. Johnson.
UT Tyler will compete at the region-level in the fall at the University of Oklahoma.
“Texhoma is the largest regional NATS Conference in the United States, with about 150 teachers, 150 accompanists and 700 students. Our students have an opportunity to be evaluated by top teachers and compete with top students from a three-state area,” said Dr. Molly Johnson, UT Tyler assistant professor of music.
Other UT Tyler participants included Matt Horn, Jennifer Fuller, Ashley McGuire and Kay Williams, piano.
