ASME Wins Contest, Student Places Third
The student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) won the Mystery Design Contest and a mechanical engineering student won third place in the Old Guard Poster competition at the Regional Student Conference in Lubbock March 31 – April 2.
UT Tyler, partnered with UT Arlington, composed a structure of spaghetti and marshmallows to support a maximum weight of BBs for the Mystery Design Contest, an impromptu design/build/test competition. This is UT Tyler’s second consecutive year to win.
John Bailey, sophomore mechanical engineering student, won third place in the Old Guard Poster Competition. His poster entitled, “Mapping Material Properties in Cylinders of Breathable Gas,” was judged on multiple criteria from a field of 14 competitors from schools including Texas A&M, The University of Houston, The University of Tulsa, UT Pan American and Letourneau University.
Attendees included Angela Riddick, Jason Reed, Jody Creel, Lance Hibbeler, John Bailey, Josh Kupke, Justin Veach, Stan Wilkins, Dr. Jeffrey Mountain, associate professor of mechanical engineering and student section advisor and Dr. Tom Crippen, professor of mechanical engineering and chairman for honors and awards for the ASME Regional Operating Board for Region X.
