| UT Tyler Debate Team Wins Trophies at Tournament
Three members of the UT Tyler debate team received first place in the varsity division and two others received honors at the International Public Debate Association National Championship Tournament, Dr. Jeffrey Hobbs, associate professor of speech communication and director of forensics, announced.
Noah Conklin, senior speech communication major; Darci Meadville, sophomore major undecided; and Ryan Palmquist, senior finance major, were three of the four semi-finalists in the varsity division. Conklin defeated a student from Stephen F. Austin State University in one side of the bracket, leaving the final round uncontested.
Bridgett Shelton, first year member of the debate team and senior English major, received an Octafinalist trophy in the novice division.
Sean Dodd, sophomore computer science major, placed 10th in the varsity division cumulative points competition based on his performance during the entire regular season, which runs from September to April.
Other UT Tyler students who attended the tournament include Cathryn Crawford, Chasity Keen, Ali Khali, Grant McKnight, Aaron Presley and Fred Siegmund.
The tournament was held April 15-17 at the University of Arkansas at Monticello for 14 universities from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio and Texas.
