UT Tyler Students Win Awards at LSAMP Conference
Two students from UT Tyler won awards at The University of Texas System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Undergraduate Student Research conference in Richardson, Texas Sept. 21 – 23.
A total of 34 undergraduate students representing the UT System campuses presented their research in either oral or poster session competitions.
Jenny Tompkins, senior interdisciplinary studies major, won second place for her oral presentation of a summer research project, “How Knot Theory and DNA do the Tangle.” Drs. Casey Mann and Jennifer McLoud-Mann, assistant professors of mathematics, served as her mentors for the research.
Dean Stuart, senior chemistry major, won second place for his poster presentation of his research on “Spectroelectrochemical Sensing of Aqueous Iron.” Dr. Tanya Shtoyko, assistant professor of chemistry, supervised Stuart’s work.
Dr. Stephen Rainwater, associate professor of computer science, and Dr. Jeffrey R. Mountain, associate professor of mechanical engineering, both served as judges for the oral competition.
The LSAMP program at UT Tyler is administered through the UT System and funded by grants from the National Science Foundation Directorate of Human Resource Development. The program is intended to increase graduate school enrollments of underrepresented students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics field by providing exposure and support for undergraduate research.
