UT Tyler Art Students and Professor to Fulfill Wish of Child with Leukemia

UT Tyler art students and professor are working with the Children’s Wish Foundation International to fulfill the wish of a 7-year-old child with leukemia.

Courtney Herron suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukemia and is being treated at the UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Four UT Tyler art students and assistant professor of art, Alexis Serio, will travel to Herron’s hometown of Oakwood, Texas Oct. 7 - 9 to complete the surprise makeover of an ocean-themed bedroom.

Serio and the students have created sketches of sea creatures, mermaids and dolphins, as well as sewn curtains, pillows and a bed canopy.

“This is such a great opportunity for the students to give back to the community,” said Serio. “It helps develop their art skills and gives them added experience. After reading about Courtney, the students have grown attached to her and are excited about making a difference in her life.”

Serio expects the project to be completed in two 10-hour days or possibly one 12-hour day depending on what problems might arise.

“It's been such a pleasure to work with UT Tyler,” said Linda Dozoretz, who formed CWFI after losing her eldest daughter to bone cancer. “They've put an entire team together to make this possible for Courtney, and I am thrilled that the students have embraced this as a project. We could have never anticipated this amount of support from both the UT Tyler administration and student body. Courtney will be thrilled.”

Herron will return home from the hospital in late October.
