Rattan to Speak at UT Tyler Poetry Awards Ceremony

Dr. Cleatus Rattan, the 2004-05 Texas Poet Laureate, will be the keynote speaker at the UT Tyler Robert R. Muntz Library Poetry Awards Ceremony, 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 in the Braithwaite Recital Hall.

Dr. Rattan will discuss his views on poetry and read several selections. The winning poems from the UT Tyler student poetry contest will be read by their respective poets and awards will be given.

His latest published collection “Take Your Time Coming Home” and “The Border” will be available for purchase at a pre-ceremony reception and book-signing from 5:45 - 6:45 p.m.

Dr. Rattan was named Texas’ Poet Laureate for 2004 by the Texas Commission on the Arts, and his appointment was ratified by the State Legislature. In 2002, he received both the New Texas Poetry Award and the Texas Review Poetry Prize.

He has written four books of poetry, numerous short stories and has had more than 250 poems published in journals and anthologies.

The event is free of charge and open to the public, but complimentary reservations for the reception should be made by Oct. 18.

The ceremony is co-sponsored by the UT Tyler Robert R. Muntz Library and the Poetry Society of Texas, and made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
