UT Tyler Appoints New Police Chief

Mike MeddersMike Medders has been named chief of police at UT Tyler, effective Oct. 1, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.

Medders has served with the Palestine Police Department for the past 15 years. He has experience as a patrolman, patrol corporal, patrol sergeant, assistant commander of narcotics task force and assistant and interim chief of police.

As assistant and interim chief of police, Medders administered, managed and directed operational activities within the police department's Patrol and Criminal Investigations Division, as well as developed and updated police department's department policies, budgeting, purchasing and administering personnel matters within the department.

Medders also represented the police department at community functions and developed and maintained liaisons with other criminal justice and community agencies.

He graduated valedictorian of the East Texas Police Academy in 1990 and earned a bachelor of science in criminal justice degree from UT Tyler in 1999, graduating cum laude.
