UT Tyler Accepting Student Applications for Archer Fellowship Program
February 20, 2006
The University of Texas at Tyler is accepting student applications to intern in Washington, D.C. through the Bill Archer Fellowship Program, Dr. Michael Eidenmuller, UT Tyler assistant professor of speech communication and campus contact for the Archer Center, announced.
The Bill Archer Fellowship was established in 2001 by The University of Texas System in conjunction with Former U.S. Representative Bill Archer.
“Each spring and fall 20 – 24 highly motivated and accomplished students are competitively selected from UT campuses to live in Washington, D.C. for a semester, participate in full-time internships and complete 12 hours of academic courses,” said Jenifer Sarver, director of the Archer Center. “Our goal is to create the next generation of public servants from Texas.”
Application deadline is Friday, March 3 and can be picked up and turned in through Dr. Eidenmuller in the UT Tyler Hudnall-Pirtle-Roosth Building, room 265.
Applicants must be UT Tyler juniors or seniors with 24 hours completed at UT Tyler, have an overall 3.0 GPA, have completed basic government requirements and have work or internship experience.
The application includes a resume, official transcript, personal statement, essay, letters of recommendations and a list of potential internships.
Each student will intern full-time, take one weekend class and two night classes taught by UT professors and live near Capitol Hill and the Supreme Court with other interns from UT System campuses.
The Archer Fellowship provides work opportunities at no charge. Students then pay for 12 hours of in-state tuition and fees, as well as the cost of books. In addition, living and working costs are out-of-pocket.
“UT Tyler is committed to the mission of the Archer Fellowship and will continue to fund a portion of student expenses. We should not underestimate the potential value to our community and our state of providing exceptionally talented students the kind of educational and professional opportunity afforded by the Archer program,” said Dr. Eidenmuller. “In the very near future, we hope to find sponsors willing to financially support our students for the program. We are looking to East Texas leaders to help in this endeavor.”
Archer Fellow finalists will be notified by Friday, March 10 and students selected to participate in the program will be notified by Friday, April 7.
