The almost $400 check brought the USVA to their $1,000 goal to purchase a spotlight for the campus flagpoles. |
A UT Tyler graduate and Army soldier donated almost $400 to the UT Tyler University Student Veterans Association to assist in purchasing a spotlight for the American flag on campus.
“I saw the article on the UT Tyler website and decided I wanted to donate the money, because the flag is very important to me,” said Scott Lunato, December 2005 UT Tyler graduate who has been active in the Army for 19 years.
The student veterans have been lowering and raising the American flag daily to coincide with the etiquette of displaying the flag. Unless spotlighted, the American flag should not fly in the dark, and should also be taken down during inclement weather.
Funds for the $1,000 spotlight came from a candy fundraiser Feb. 14 that brought in $375, and the remaining $625 was donated.
A special flag folding presentation will be held 5:10 p.m. on President’s Day, Monday, Feb. 20, at the campus flagpoles. The UT Tyler community and public are invited to hear Dr. Thomas Allen, associate professor of music and Marine veteran, read a poem explaining the representation of each fold of the American flag.
