UT Tyler Works with Local Agencies to Collect Donations
August 31, 2005UT Tyler will work with four local nonprofit agencies to collect much-needed items for the Hurricane Katrina evacuees, Dr. Lou Ann Berman, executive director of community relations and student success, announced.
PATH, Goodwill Industries, East Texas Food Bank and Salvation Army will work under the direction of the Red Cross to provide necessities to evacuees in the local area.
“The Red Cross does not have a system in place to accept donated items, and their volunteers are busy helping the families. Our agencies do have a system in place to accept items, so it makes sense that we take that burden off of the Red Cross,” said Christina Fulsom, PATH executive director.
Items needed are food, clothing, air mattresses, diapers, linens and towels.
Donations should be made as follows:
- Food – East Texas Food Bank and PATH.
- Clothing – Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries.
- All other listed items can be donated to either of the four agencies.
Currently, the Red Cross needs money and trained volunteers.
“UT Tyler will participate in the citywide strategic plan in any way we can to provide the greatest impact possible,” said Dr. Berman.
The Black Student Association and The Talon student newspaper at UT Tyler have already begun collecting items.
The educational needs of the evacuated students are also a strong UT Tyler focus, she added.
“We stand ready to assist with book drives and tutoring. Whatever it takes to help these young people educationally,” Dr. Berman said.
UT Tyler has accepted two students from New Orleans’ Tulane University.
