September 3, 2005Message from the President
UT Tyler family:
Hurricane Katrina is arguably the worst natural disaster to strike our nation. We have all seen the horror and felt the need to help.
One vital help we can provide is to offer our Fisch Convocation Center as an American Red Cross shelter. On September 3, approximately 120 evacuees arrived from New Orleans. I’ve listened to many of their stories. Several are those you have seen on network news being rescued by the Coast Guard from the roofs of their flooded homes.
Upon arriving, the evacuees proceeded through security checks and into medical triage. You can be proud of our UT Tyler nursing students and faculty working with many others to evaluate and provide excellent medical care. Volunteers from Grace Community Church and Bethel Baptist were generous in providing clean clothes and bedding.
After all that they have suffered, we want them to feel as safe and comfortable as possible. We have designated certain areas of the Herrington Patriot Center specifically for the evacuees, and I thank you in advance for respecting their privacy needs.
UT Tyler and City of Tyler police officers are posted throughout this area to assist. You may also see many dozens of American Red Cross trained volunteers over the next month. Evacuees can be identified by a white wristband worn on the right arm. Their names are written in red. Volunteers and shelter staff are wearing white and green wristbands on the left arm, and their names are written in green.
To volunteer or help with our shelter, contact Dr. Lou Ann Berman (903.566.7052) or visit the UT Tyler ARC training site, UC 101. (Katrina updates on www.uttyler.edu)
I am so proud of the UT Tyler community and your willingness to serve those in need.
