UT Tyler Receives $10,000 Gift from SCMS
The Smith County Medical Society presented The University of Texas at Tyler with a $10,000 gift April 26 to aid UT Tyler students who are planning a career in medicine.
Members of the SCMS Drs. Fagg Sanford, Gary Gross, Charles Dickson, Stephen Rydzak and Jerry Schwarzbach presented the check to Dr. John Boucher, UT Tyler assistant professor of biology, and 23 UT Tyler pre-med students at a reception.
“Any student who is actively on an academic path toward medical school is to benefit,” said Boucher. “This includes students from all academic departments.”
The gift will provide travel to seminars and internships, support for independent studies, support for financially disadvantaged students, dues for pre-med associations, pre-med and MCAT exam tutorial materials, tutors for the MCAT exam, medical journals and other medically related reference books as well as an award for outstanding pre-med student.
“It also will be used to host medical school personnel and physicians here at The University of Texas at Tyler who could give first hand knowledge of medical schools, their application process and what it means to be a medical student,” said Boucher.
UT Tyler is in the process of developing a mentoring program with the Smith County Medical Society for pre-med students. The students will be able to observe physicians in their work environment, Boucher added.
