In the Spotlight: Torey Nalbone, associate professor and chair

Dr. J. Torey Nalbone has been reelected to serve as chair of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. A professional organization responsible for setting guidelines for chemical exposure and ventilation practices and used by policy makers and regulators internationally. Serving UT Tyler since 2003, he is an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering and chair for both the UT Tyler Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Construction Management.

Nalbone has been an ACGIH member for nearly 30 years. He has volunteered his services to the organization’s technical committees throughout that time, specifically in leadership roles on the Agricultural Safety and Health and the Bioaerosols Committees. He began a four-year rotation on the Board of Directors in January 2012 as vice-chair elect.

He previously served as director of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and elected as its chair from 2010-12; as treasurer of the Academy of Industrial Hygiene from 2004-07 as well as member of the conference team and the Academic Accreditation Committee of AIH. Nalbone also served on other professional business and technical committees.

He currently serves as a commissioner on the ABET – Applied Sciences Accreditation Commission and has participated in the accreditation of industrial hygienist programs across the country as an evaluator, team chair or editor.

Nalbone holds a master of science in environmental science-engineering from the UT Dallas School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary engineering with a concentration in health protection from Texas A&M University. His areas of interest include air pollution control, risk assessment and management, indoor environmental quality and health protection engineering.

UT Tyler students in the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Construction Management develop knowledge and skills on the cutting edge through student-centered undergraduate and graduate education and research. Programs offered include both the bachelor of science and master of science in civil engineering as well as the bachelor of science in construction management.
