UT Tyler is building a park that will not only add to the overall beauty of the campus but, more importantly, also improve visibility and safety on the south side of campus.

"We are carefully thinning smaller trees and removing undergrowth around Parking Lot 18 to increase safety and make those areas useful for the entire campus community,” said Jesse Acosta, vice president for administration.

“Removing underbrush for safety has been a long-running request of freshman students in Ornelas Hall. Not surprisingly, many students simply would not park in Lot 18 after dark.”

Tables, chairs and benches will be added to the area to create a peaceful outdoor place for study and relaxation. The objective is to increase safety while maintaining the campus’ natural beauty.

“We will be extremely careful to keep this area park-like, similar to the rest of campus with beautiful trees and appropriate visibility under them, and to make sure it conforms to our campus master plan. We are ever mindful of both our environment and our goal to continue to have the most beautiful campus in Texas,” Acosta added.
