UT Tyler Announces 2015 Veterans Week

UT Tyler will hold special events for veterans and the campus community Nov. 9 – 13 as part of 2015 Veterans Week, Chris Cox, Veterans Resource Center coordinator, announced.

To kick-off the week, the UT Tyler Office of Veteran Affairs will host a breakfast for all veterans 8 – 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9 at the VRC, located on the first floor of the University Center. An information table also will be set up in the UC that day.

“We are proud to celebrate the second Veterans Week at UT Tyler,” Cox said. “This year, we have added several new events including a military history quiz that is for faculty and staff only, a coin challenge for dependents, a Lego guessing contest open to anyone and a week-long scavenger hunt with over 70 prizes.

“We encourage UT Tyler students, faculty, staff, alumni and community supporters to come by and visit the Veterans Resource Center or participate in several volunteer opportunities including filling boxes for deployed soldiers and spending time at the Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home.”

Monday, Nov. 9

  • Military history quiz: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. VRC info table. Open to UT Tyler faculty and staff only.
  • Scavenger hunt and Lego guess contest begins. Open to the entire campus community. For more details, visit the VRC or information table 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 10

  • Potato bar lunch: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. VRC. Open to all UT Tyler veterans.
  • Coin Challenge: 1 – 4 p.m. VRC.
  • Trade Day for Gear.

Wednesday, Nov. 11

  • Veterans Day at Watkins Logan Home: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Watkins Logan Home. Cooking food and visiting with families.

Thursday, Nov. 12

  • Student Veteran Panel: 10 – 11 a.m. UC Theater. Come find out what it means to be a veteran; ask questions.
  • Call of Duty tournament: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Prizes to top players. Open to the entire campus community. Food for participants in Patriot Zone.
  • Alumni Day: UT Tyler veteran alumni receive free t-shirts in the VRC and also after panel.

Friday, Nov. 13

  • RED ‘Remember Everyone Deployed’ Day: Student veterans are encouraged to wear RED shirt.
  • Collect clothing for ‘Suit Up for Vets’ – drop off location at the VRC.
  • Veterans lunch: 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. VRC. Open to all UT Tyler veterans.
  • Lego contest winner and scavenger hunt winners announced.

The mission of the UT Tyler Veterans Resource Center is to provide a pipeline of information including resources, support and advocacy for student veterans and dependents to utilize in order to create successful leaders on campus, the community and Smith County.
