The pedestrian crosswalk on Old Omen Road is designed to ensure the safety of the UT Tyler community.

The crosswalk system features pedestrian push-button operation with flashing red lights that will turn steady red as well as a countdown signal to indicate pedestrian clearance times.

  • Pedestrians activate the system with the push button, and the sequence begins. They will be given the traditional 'walk,' 'change' and 'don't walk' intervals with a countdown signal. These intervals will be indicated by a white symbol of a person walking, an orange flashing hand symbol and a steady orange hand symbol, respectively.
  • Drivers are required to stop and remain stopped on a solid red light.
  • Drivers must also stop on a flashing red light but may proceed when the crosswalk is clear of pedestrian traffic.

"Pedestrians should always take extra time to check traffic both ways prior to crossing the street, and drivers are urged to watch for pedestrian traffic," said Mike Medders, UT Tyler police chief.

Both city and campus police will be monitoring the area closely to ensure all applicable laws are being obeyed, Medders added.
