The UT Tyler Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will hold a Teaching Town Hall meeting for university faculty, Dr. Julie Delello, center director, announced.
"Actively Engaging Students: A Panel Discussion" will be 3 – 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28 in the UT Tyler James H. Stewart Jr. Administration Building, room 301. Featured guest panelist is Dr. Claire Major, professor of higher education and department chair of educational leadership, technology and policy studies at the University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa. "Research tells us most students learn best when they are actively engaged in the classroom. This panel presentation is intended to highlight a variety of instructional strategies faculty members use to promote student engagement and learning in different environments such as large classes, online classes and with diverse student populations," said Delello.
Major teaches courses on college teaching, technology in higher education and reading research in the field of higher education. Her research interests are in the areas of faculty work, pedagogical approaches, technology for teaching and online learning. She is currently working on her latest book about active learning strategies for faculty.
She also publishes her work in leading education journals and presents at both national and international conferences. Major holds a Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Georgia, a master of arts in English from the University of Alabama – Birmingham and a bachelor of arts from the University of South Alabama.
