Dr. Marcy Ragland beginning fall semester instruction

Dr. Marcy Ragland began her fall semester on July 31, offering instruction in voice, piano, organ, clarinet, flute, saxophone, violin/ cello/bass violin, percussion and guitar.

Tremendous effort is directed toward very positive reinforcement and encouragement of all students, and the teaching environment is very warm, cordial and Christian-centered.

Dr. Ragland holds bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees and has taught music in Longview ISD for 29 years.

Her choirs consistently earned first-division and sweepstakes ratings in UIL competition, and her strings programs for young students in the public schools have earned many accolades from the community as well.

Her elementary-level students won first place at the state level in music competition in both 1999 and 2004.

Dr. Ragland serves as pianist at First United Methodist Church in Gilmer.

Assisting Dr. Ragland in the studio, located at 103 Kimway Circle in Gilmer, are Shannon Brady, Janet Mask, Louise Hill and Dr. Ragland's son, Derek Moore.

Ms. Brady is a "graduate" of the strings program of Longview ISD, holds a bachelors degree from the University of North Texas, and is an orchestra teacher in Kilgore ISD.

Moore is a graduate of the University of Texas at Tyler and is pursuing a masters degree.

The studio has been operating in Gilmer for nine years. During that time, numerous students have earned All-Region honors; six students have also earned All-State honors in band and choir, including two first-chair and one second-chair rankings in the Texas All-State Band.

Many students have additionally earned first division ratings at UIL, at both the regional and state levels, and the studio has consistently produced music majors at the college level on substantial scholarships.

Dr. Ragland's violin, cello and guitar orchestras have performed at numerous civic events around Upshur County, and plans have been made to additionally perform at numerous civic and church activities for the coming year.
