![]() UT Tyler Chamber Choir And Orchestra Present ConcertApril 19, 2001 The University of Texas at Tyler chamber choir and orchestra will perform selected works by Franz Josef Haydn and Johann Sebastian Bach at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24 at Pollard United Methodist Church, Dr. Thomas Allen, UT Tyler music program coordinator, has announced. The one-hour concert, which is free of charge and open to the public, will include Haydn's Mass in D Minor, "Lord Nelson Mass," and Bach's Motet #VI, "Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden." "This concert is the second annual choir and orchestra event given in honor of the musical life of the late Janet Wheeler who was a member of the UT Tyler music faculty until her untimely death in February 2000. Joining the UT Tyler chamber choir will be the Robert E. Lee High School chorale and chamber choir as well as members of the Pollard United Methodist Church chancel choir," Dr. Allen said. The "Lord Nelson Mass" is considered to be one of Haydn's greatest works from one of his most productive periods, 1796-1802. Originally composed to honor Admiral Horatio Nelson, victor of the naval battle at Aboukir the Mass in D Minor is a work of grand design that would later provide influence for Beethoven in his two settings of the Catholic liturgical text. Bach's Motet, "Lobet den Herrn," Praise God, all ye lands, was written around 1722 and is the only example of his six motets written for four voice choir with orchestral accompaniment, the other five being scored for five or more voice parts. |
