UT Tyler Library Enhances Online Catalog
May 7, 2001
The Robert R. Muntz Library at The University of
Texas at Tyler is enhancing its online catalog to
include netLibrary titles, Jeanne Pyle, library director,
announced.
The netLibrary offers students, faculty and staff
in The University of Texas System electronic access
to reference, scholarly and professional books. The
UT Tyler library has access to more than 20,000 netLibrary
titles, selected by librarians throughout the UT System.
The netLibrary allows users to electronically browse,
check out and download books while providing publishers
copyright protection safeguards. The books are searchable,
and users can copy and paste or print selected passages
of up to 5,000 characters.
UT Tyler users can access the netLibrary from the
library's Web page at the university's Web site (www.uttyler.edu).
With the enhancement, the library's online general
catalog also will indicate what is available in the
netLibrary. "We want the library's catalog to
reflect what we have access to, whether it's a print
book or magazine or digital book or magazine,'' said
Pyle. "We have purchased digital records so that
users can find netLibrary titles in our catalog. They
can click and go straight to a netLibrary title.''
The library has added records for 5,000 netLibrary
titles to the catalog since March and anticipates
adding at least two more loads of approximately 5,000
records each, Pyle said.
Students, faculty and staff should be able to access
the netLibrary from any computer on campus. To access
the program off campus, they must first access it
on campus and establish an account. The netLibrary
guides the user through a step-by-step process to
establish the account.
The UT System gained access to the netLibrary last
year through Academic Library Collection Enhancement
funds acquired by UT Austin. The netLibrary also includes
titles made available through TexShare, a statewide
program funded by the Texas Legislature and administered
by the Texas State Library.
