UT Tyler Student Earns Second Place at Biology National Convention

Angela Roe of Canton received second place in the Frank G. Brooks Award for Excellence in Student Research at the Tri Beta National Biological Honor Society 2002 Biennial National Convention, Dr. James Koukl, The University of Texas at Tyler associate professor of biology, announced.

Roe, a spring 2002 UT Tyler graduate, presented a paper detailing her research in determining the normal flora of the gastrointestinal tract of the three-toed box turtle. Her presentation was one of almost 80 papers.

Dr. Koukl served as faculty advisor for the project.

The research has implications in re-establishing animal populations that may carry infectious diseases and transmit them to other animal populations, according to Dr. Koukl.

The convention was held last month in San Antonio, where more than 50 colleges and universities participated.

Roe earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from UT Tyler.

The UT Tyler Tri Beta Chapter is for students interested in the biological sciences and emphasizes stimulation of scholarship, dissemination of scientific knowledge and promotion of biological research.
