UT Tyler Provides Flexible Liberal Arts DegreeStudents wishing to create an individualized program in the liberal arts have an opportunity to do so through The University of Texas at Tyler's bachelor of general studies program, Dr. Donna Dickerson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has announced.
The BGS degree is designed for students looking for a broad arts and sciences degree outside of the majors currently available in the College of Arts and Sciences.
"Students can always major in the traditional areas such as art, biology, English, math. But, this degree lets highly motivated students create their own interdisciplinary degree," said Dickerson.
Students combine courses across two or more disciplines in order to address a theme, a period, a set of problems or perspectives.
An example of an interdisciplinary theme would be American Studies, in which a student would combine courses from English, history and art that deal with American culture and ideas.
"During the senior year, BGS students complete a senior project that pulls the material together into a coherent package," Dickerson added.
Other interdisciplinary areas might include Environmental Studies, Health Communication, Women's Studies, African-American Studies, or Legal Studies.
"The areas are limited only by the student's imagination and the courses currently available," said Dickerson.
Students interested in the BGS degree can contact Dr. Olga Supek, director of the College of Arts and Sciences advising center, at (903) 566-7418.
