UT Tyler Announces Outstanding Musicians

The University of Texas at Tyler Music Program has announced the names of Outstanding Musicians selected in the Spring 2002 Piano Skills Festival.

More than 75 students from Tyler, Longview, Kilgore, Canton, Kaufman, Kemp and Terrell participated in the festival at UT Tyler, which included three events of technique, harmonization and sight-reading on Jan. 26 and two memorized repertoire selections performed for adjudication on March 2, Vicki Conway, senior lecturer of music, said.

Ribbons were awarded for each of the five events entered and judges selected the outstanding performers within each division level.

An Outstanding Musician Recital and Awards Presentation was held March 3 with selected students performing on the Steinway concert grand piano in the Braithwaite Recital Hall at UT Tyler's R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. Outstanding Musician trophies and medals were presented. Students receiving an A or A+ score in each of the five events earned a trophy. Students receiving four A or A+ scores and one B+ score earned a medal.

Outstanding Musicians were:
Canton/Kaufman/Kemp/Terrell area - Students earning a trophy and performing in the Outstanding Musicians Recital were Grant Cooper of Canton, Jessica Key of Kemp and Jacob Carr of Canton. Also earning a trophy was Ashton Farmer of Kemp.

Earning a medal and performing in the recital was Laura Lindsey of Terrell. Also earning a medal was Whitney Lindsey of Terrell.

Participating teachers were Phyllis Fox of Kaufman and Marilyn Wright of Athens.

Longview - Students earning a trophy and performing in the Outstanding Musicians Recital were Kelsey Alexander, Camille Bennett, Kristin Burns, Caitlin Gilchrist and Dominick Scalco. Also earning trophies were Lisa Butler and Alina Whitehorn.

Students earning a medal and performing in the recital were Katie Burns, Alicia Conway, Lindsey Conway and Lauren Holloway. Also earning medals were Courtney Bennett, Cole Cammack and Catrine Johansen.
Participating teachers were Vicki Conway, Pat DeSain, Lisa Pevey and Laura Vermillion.

Tyler - Students earning a trophy and performing in the Outstanding Musicians Recital were Ezra Allen, Clayton Armstrong, Meredith Butler, Beth Felix, Kristin Goodwin, Cate Prejean and Katie Wolford. Also earning trophies were Caitlin Armstrong and Alli Fischer.

Students earning a medal and performing in the recital were Lauren Callender, Chelsye Emmons, Meredith Harris, Marygayle Martin and Russell McCook. Also earning medals were Isaiah Bercot, Rachel Carroll, Katy Edwards, Lauren Jones, Melanie Kehrer, Monica Kehrer, Matt McDowell and Carly Sharawi.

Participating teachers were Shelly Davis, Helen Elbert, Saundra Guinn, Andrea Holcek, Stephanie Krueger and Judy Wilkins.
