UT Tyler Announces New Student Media Advisory Policy

The University of Texas at Tyler has developed a new Student Media Advisory Policy, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.

The policy, which includes a new 11-member board consisting of faculty, staff and students was rewritten after consultation with the University's faculty senate, student government association and student newspaper staff.

President Mabry plans to seek additional input from professional journalists before forwarding the revised policy to the UT System officials for review.

Time needed for President Mabry to get opinion from several constituencies and to submit the policy changes for review by the UT System means the advisory board was not able to meet and select student editors and publication advisors in April as the policy defines.

"We have been working diligently to gather input and revise the Student Media Advisory Board policy. Although we've have made considerable progress, the revised policy is not yet complete," said Mabry.

Vanessa Curry will be given another one-year contract and will work with the new Student Media Advisory Board.

"I'm very happy that the issue has been resolved and I look forward to working with the paper in the next year and teaching students about journalism," Curry said.

In the last two weeks, the University has had an opportunity to further review the reports and other information surrounding the student newspaper matter. That additional review confirmed that the original decision regarding Curry had nothing to do with the student newspaper's content but to lack of communication and inaccurate information.

The new Student Media Advisory Board includes five students, one from each college of the University, three faculty members, the dean of student affairs and two professional journalists.

The preliminary draft of the new student publications policy can be read at the UT Tyler website (www.uttyler.edu).
