UT Tyler Faculty Receive Teaching Awards

Dr. Arun Kulkarni, professor of computer science, and Dr. H. Neil Gray, assistant professor of chemistry, are recipients of teaching awards at The University of Texas at Tyler, Dr. David O'Keeffe, provost and vice president of academic affairs, announced.

Dr. Kulkarni has been awarded the 2002 Chancellor's Council Award, which is given for excellence in teaching at components within The University of Texas System.

Dr. Kulkarni, who joined the UT Tyler faculty in 1986, has authored two books and published more than 50 papers. His research interests include computer vision, fuzzy-neural systems, data mining, image processing and artificial intelligence.

He has successfully completed eight research grants during the past 10 years and serves as principal investigator for a grant for the deployment of the UT Tyler Infinity Project, which is designed to interest high school students in pursuing careers in computer science and engineering.

Dr. Kulkarni is the recipient of several awards and honors including the 1984 Fulbright Fellowship award, 1997 NASA/ASSE Summer Faculty Fellowship, 1997 Piper Award nominee for UT Tyler and Alpha Chi Outstanding Faculty Member for 1999-2000. He has been listed in Who's Who in America.

He holds a doctorate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and was a post-doctoral fellow at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.

Dr. Gray is UT Tyler's 2002-03 nominee for the Minnie Stevens Piper Award for outstanding teaching. As a Piper Award nominee, he will hold the White Fellowship for Teaching Excellence for the 2003-04 academic year.

He joined the UT Tyler faculty in 1996. The author of numerous publications, he has been involved in securing more than $400,000 in grant monies for various research projects.

He holds a bachelor of science degree from UT Tyler and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. The courses he teaches include advanced chemical lab techniques, analytical chemistry, chemical literature, chemistry and society, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry.

Dr. Gray received the Chancellor's Council Award in 2001. He is the recipient of several other honors and awards including the Exceptional Performance Assessment, Los Alamos National Lab; Hoechst Celanese Corporation Excellence in Chemistry Award; Dow Chemical's Industry and University Co-op Chemistry Fellowship for Gifted Students; and American Institute of Chemists Foundation Senior Chemistry Student of the Year.
