UT Tyler Announces ‘WelcomeFest’ Activities


The University of Texas at Tyler will kick off the 2003-04 school year with WelcomeFest activities Aug. 16-29.

WelcomeFest is coordinated by the UT Tyler Office of Student Development, with several student organizations, campus offices and individuals involved in organizing the events.

“WelcomeFest is a collaborative effort of the university community to reach out to new and returning students and to offer opportunities for them to develop relationships and interests that will serve to enhance their college experience,’’ said Shaune Martinez, student development specialist.
Activities will include:

Saturday, Aug. 16 – During move-in at the University Pines student apartments, the Student Government Association will provide bottled water and Cornerstone and the Baptist Student Ministry will welcome students and sponsor an evening cookout for University Pines residents.

Monday, Aug. 18 – 2003-04 Academic Year Convocation, 8:30 a.m. in the Cowan Center Vaughn Auditorium.

Tuesday, Aug. 19 – Transfer and International Student Orientation, 9:30-11 a.m. in Room 158 of the Business Administration Building; and “Movie on the Lawn’’ sponsored by the offices of Student Activities and Student Development, 8:45-11 p.m. behind the University Center.

Wednesday, Aug. 20 – The SGA will provide breakfast in several buildings on campus. A Wiffle Ball Home Run Derby is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. at the UT Tyler Herrington Patriot Center.

Thursday, Aug. 21 – Cornerstone will serve lunch at noon in Room 118 of the University Center. Thirteen Ways: The Literary Appreciation Club and the Department of Literature and Languages will feature a movie at 7 p.m. in Room 401 at the UT Tyler library.

Friday, Aug. 22 – Frisbee golf sponsored by Prescott Webb Historical Society/Phi Alpha Theta, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., starting at the University Center; music department reception for all students majoring or minoring in music, 7 p.m.-8 p.m., Braithwaite Recital Hall; and a PJ Party sponsored by the African American Student Organization, 9 p.m., University Center.

Saturday, Aug. 23 – The Student Activities Programming Board will sponsor a daylong softball tournament at Lindsey Park in Tyler. The event is open to the public. To sign up, contact Ernest McAllister, student activities coordinator, 903-566-7281 or emcallister@uttyler.edu.

Sunday, Aug. 24 – Athletic Supporters and VIPatriots will sponsor a sand volleyball tournament, 1 p.m., University Pines volleyball court. For information about signing up, contact Virginia Beers at 903-566-7054.

Monday, Aug. 25 – Activities at the University Center will include ice cream served by the SGA and Wheel of History presented by the Prescott Webb Historical Society/ Phi Alpha Theta, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the open area; and lunch served by the Baptist Student Ministry, noon, Room 118.

Tuesday, Aug. 26 – Activities at the University Center will include Student Development Open Door Celebration, 9-11 a.m., Room 111; Volunteer Fair, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the open area; blood drive, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Room 118; and lunch provided by the Alumni Association, noon in the open area.

Wednesday, Aug. 27 – “Winning Ways: How to be a Prospering Patriot” Student Success Seminar with lunch, noon, University Center Room 118.

Thursday, Aug. 28 – Student Organizations Showcase, 10:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in the University Center open area; and lunch served by Cornerstone, noon in University Center Room 118.

Friday, Aug. 29 – Tailgate party and first home soccer game, 4-7 p.m. at the soccer field. The activities will be sponsored by the offices of Student Development and Business Affairs.
