UT Tyler to Present 2003-04 Distinguished Lecture Series

Gen. Wesley K. Clark, CNN military analyst, author and former NATO supreme allied commander, will be the first speaker in the 2003-04 Distinguished Lecture Series at The University of Texas at Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. The Vernon and Amy Faulconer Lecture will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 30, in Vaughn Auditorium.

The series will conclude with Col. Oliver North, combat-decorated Marine, best-selling author and former U.S. counter-terrorism coordinator, on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004.

“Clark and North will provide different views on military, political and world issues of great concern to United States citizens,’’ said Susan Thomae-Morphew, Cowan Center director. “These distinguished guests add prestige to the long line of prominent speakers at UT Tyler in the series’ 21st season.”

Season tickets are $18 and will be available at the Cowan Center box office beginning Monday, July 21. Tickets including valet parking and a reception before the lecture are $102. Summer box office hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Clark retired as one of the nation’s most highly decorated military officers since Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. His leadership experiences have taken him from Vietnam to Latin America and ultimately to the position of NATO’s supreme allied commander. At that post, Clark commanded all NATO forces in the Kosovo conflict, saving 1.5 million Albanians from ethnic cleansing without a single Allied casualty.

Seen daily on CNN as a military analyst, Clark provides expert commentary on the war on terrorism and American foreign policy. He is the author of the Washington Post bestseller, “Waging Modern War.’’ From the podium, Clark uses his expertise to offer insight into current military conflicts around the world and offers a singularly informed view of leadership based on honor, conviction and action.

North is the founder of a small business, an inventor with three U.S. patents, a syndicated columnist, host of a nationally syndicated daily radio show and host of “War Stories’’ on the Fox News Channel.

Born in San Antonio, North graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served 22 years as a U.S. Marine. His awards for service in combat include the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for valor and two Purple Hearts for wounds in action. North has written three bestsellers, “Under Fire,’’ “One More Mission’’ and his latest “Mission Compromised.’’
