October 11, 2004

The University of Texas at Tyler School of Visual and Performing Arts will host the Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet on Monday, Oct. 18, Dr. John Webb, UT Tyler SVPA director, announced.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the UT Tyler Braithwaite Recital Hall.

The quartet also will conduct a clinic from 1:30 – 2 p.m. for the UT Tyler Wind Ensemble and for Tyler ISD music students from 2 – 3 p.m.

Concert sponsors include Selmer/LeBlanc Company, Tyler ISD, Friends of the Arts and the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center, College of Arts and Sciences, music program and School of Visual and Performing Arts.

“This saxophone quartet is, arguably, the finest quartet in the United States. They combine a lively, entertaining, people-friendly presentation in clinic and concerts, as well as expert musicianship. They perform works ranging from Bach, Mozart, Glazunov and Debussy to Joplin, vaudeville, swing and jazz standards,” Dr. Webb said.

The Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet performs on 12 different saxophones from the piccolo-like sopranino to the baritone.

Presenting more than 60 concerts each season, the Quartet has performed across the country from Boston to San Francisco. The group has appeared on radio and television.

Quartet members include Pittel, Vincent Gnojek, Roger Greenberg and Dan Goble.
