The University of Texas at Tyler’s Iota Nu Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing has received Key Chapter status, Dr. Linda Klotz, UT Tyler College of Nursing and Health Sciences dean, announced.
The Key Chapter award honors chapters for overall excellence in chapter-related activities such as programming and professional and leadership development.
“It is an incredible honor that our chapter has received this designation,” said Dr. Barbara Haas, associate professor in nursing, who serves as Iota Nu Chapter president. “We made a conscious decision in 2005 to seek Key Chapter status. Having a specific goal in mind encouraged increased chapter activity, focusing on the strategic directions of the International Society which are leadership, knowledge, service and community.”
During the past two years, the chapter has helped bring internationally recognized speakers to Tyler as part of major research conferences. It also is active in local and international service projects. Through their efforts, the chapter raised several thousand dollars for cancer-related research while participating in the Smith County Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society.
“We’ve also helped support the National School of Nursing in Guatemala Escuela Nacional de Enfermeria by providing them with Spanish textbooks and computers for their library,” Haas added.
Sigma Theta Tau International, with more than 405,000 members in 92 countries, works to improve the health of the world’s people. There are currently 451 chapters.
