UT Tyler Offers Travel-Study Course to Guatemala

Students at The University of Texas at Tyler have an opportunity to learn about cultural history and health care in a developing nation, Dr. Linda Klotz, UT Tyler College of Nursing and Health Sciences dean, announced.

Offered online during the spring 2008 semester, the special topics course is titled “Guatemala: Cultural Heritage, Political History and Current Health Issues” and is open to both undergraduate- and graduate-level students.

Students enrolled also will travel to Guatemala March 8 – 15, 2008 with visits to Rio Dulce, the Mayan ruins of Tikal, a clinic in the coastal village of Sarstun and the colonial capital of Antigua. Traveling cost is approximately $1,500, excluding course tuition.

Dr. Debbie Mahoney, UT Tyler associate professor of clinical nursing, and Deborah Bell, UT Tyler clinical instructor, will teach the course.

“This online course is available to all majors who have an interest in heath care in developing nations,” said Mahoney. “An initial informational meeting will be scheduled. Even though the course will be offered online, the class will meet occasionally on campus.”
