Student leaders and organizations at The University of Texas at Tyler were recognized during the 2012 Student Leadership and Service Awards Banquet, Ona Tolliver, assistant vice president and dean of students, announced.

Among awards presented, UT Tyler Beta Alpha Psi received “Student Organization of the Year.” Among 2011-12 projects, the organization held an alumni event to promote professional networking among UT Tyler graduates and students. Members also helped to promote financial literacy through interactive presentations at Whitehouse High School and developed a relationship with the King's Storehouse. They also volunteered with People Attempting to Help of East Texas in PATH’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

Student leader Brakeyshia Samms of Carrollton received multiple awards, including “Student Government Association Senator of the Year,” “Legacy Award” and the “Drs. Robert and Shirley Jones Leadership Award.”

University students, faculty and staff submitted nominees, and a selection committee consisting of faculty and staff chose winners. The UT Tyler Office of Student Life and Leadership sponsored the awards reception.

Awards and recipients are:

SGA Spirit Award – Daniel Simpson of Bullard.

SGA Extra Mile Award – Nathan Landers of Bonham.

SGA Project of the Year – Regina Hoyne of Tyler, Nathan Landers of Bonham and the Construction Management Association for Disability Awareness Day.

Outstanding Community Service Individual – Amber Amerson of Tyler.

Outstanding Community Service Organization – Alpha Phi Omega.

Greek Cup – Alpha Chi Omega.

Excellence in Service – Alpha Chi Omega.

Fraternity Man of the Year – Dylan Groce of Longview and Jonathan Getz of Tyler (tie).

Sorority Woman of the Year – Chelsea Hudson of North Richland Hills.

Emerging Leader Award – Kayla Bello of Houston.

Outstanding Student Organization Member – Michele Jenkins of Tyler.

Outstanding Student Organization President – John Burleson of Teague.

Outstanding Student Organization Adviser – Dr. Veronda Willis, assistant professor of accounting.

Program of the Year – TOMS Shoes Garage Sale, hosted by the TOMS Shoes Campus Club.
