UT Tyler to Hold 2012 New Student Convocation, Social Events

The University of Texas at Tyler will hold New Student Convocation and social events for its 2012 freshman class in August, Ona Tolliver, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students, announced.

Scheduled events are as follows:

  • Thursday, Aug. 16

Freshmen will move into on-campus housing (Those who are approved for early move-in may do so Tuesday, Aug. 14).

  • Friday, Aug. 17

The Office of New Student Programs will partner with the East Texas Food Bank to host an all-freshman Day of Service beginning at 1 p.m.

  • Saturday, Aug. 18

The Office of New Student Programs will host an all-freshman Casino Night in the University Center.

  • Monday, Aug. 20

Fall 2012 classes begin.

  • Aug. 20 – 24

The university’s welcome week, Patriot Palooza, provides all students with free food, concerts, movies and other social activities on campus.

  • Tuesday, Aug. 21

A pre-convocation social will be at 4 p.m. in the UC theater. Following the social, the UT Tyler 2012 New Student Convocation will begin at 5 p.m. All freshman and transfer students are invited to attend.

This year’s convocation speaker is author and linguistics scholar Dr. Deborah Fallows. Her 2010 nonfiction book, Dreaming in Chinese: Mandarin Lessons in Life, Love, and Language, was given to every freshman as part of the UT Tyler 2012 Freshman Summer Reading Program.

In the book, Fallows recounts experiences living in Shanghai with her husband and shares her understanding of the behaviors, culture and humanity of modern China through the Mandarin language.

  • Wednesday, Aug. 22

The UT Tyler Patriot Freshman Connection team will hold a mentor meet and greet for all freshmen 4:30 – 6 p.m. in the UC ballroom.
