A new art gallery space for student work is now open at The University of Texas at Tyler, Ona Tolliver, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students, announced.

The University Center Gallery is located on the third level of the UC and open during the center’s regular business hours.

“We are very proud of this new addition to our University Center,” Tolliver said. “I felt that providing a location within the University Center where the members of the UT Tyler community and visitors could see the great work our students in both the Department of Art and Art History and the Department of Communication produce was essential.

“We are proud of the work our students create, and we strive to provide as many opportunities as we can for students to showcase their work and for our students to become exposed to these creative pieces,” she added.

This gallery joins the Meadows Gallery and the Fine Arts Complex Gallery as spaces on campus that showcase student work.

The current exhibition in the University Center Gallery features advanced undergraduate and graduate ceramic student work created in courses offered by the art and art history department and led by Gary Hatcher, professor and department chair; and Merrie Wright, assistant professor of art.

“These works span the ceramic spectrum from pottery to unique vessels and sculpture. They represent a variety of construction methods, glazing procedures and firing techniques that our students explore,” Wright said.

Vanessa Joyner, senior lecturer of visual design, will organize undergraduate visual design and publication design work created in courses offered by the communication department for the next exhibition.
