The University of Texas at Tyler alumna Karen Reynolds of Elkins, Ark. was named Arkansas’ Nurse Practitioner of the Year, Dr. Scott Marzilli, College of Nursing and Health Sciences interim dean, announced.

Reynolds was nominated for the honor by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, which annually recognizes excellence in the profession.

“The AANP State Award for Excellence is a very prestigious honor,” said Dr. Barbara Haas, UT Tyler professor and associate dean for graduate nursing programs. “The AANP represents approximately 155,000 nurse practitioners from all specialty areas and only 50 of those healthcare providers are recognized each year.”

Reynolds graduated from UT Tyler in summer 2009 with a master of science in nursing – family nurse practitioner track.

She will be recognized this June at the AANP National Conference in Las Vegas.

The MSN – Nurse Practitioner degree program at UT Tyler prepares students for advanced clinical practice roles in family health and pediatrics. Students develop expertise as a primary care provider with advanced skills in the assessment and management of health care needs and patient education.
