UT Tyler Industrial Technology Student Chapter, Faculty Recognized at National Conference

The University of Texas at Tyler’s Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering student chapter and industrial technology program were both recognized at the annual ATMAE Conference, Dr. Harold Doty, College of Business and Technology dean, announced.

The UT Tyler ATMAE student chapter group earned the Outstanding Student Chapter Award for the second consecutive year.

Outstanding Student Chapters are recognized based on the number of ATMAE student members in the chapter and the range and quality of activities sponsored by the chapter. The UT Tyler chapter competed with more than 50 other ATMAE student chapters across the country to earn the honor.

“I am really proud of my students for working so hard throughout the year and sacrificing their free time to coordinate or assist with numerous community service projects, industrial plant tours, fundraising activities and social events,” said Dr. Heshium Lawrence, assistant professor and chapter faculty adviser.

In addition, Dr. Mark R. Miller, professor and program coordinator, received the 2012 ATMAE Outstanding Faculty Excellence Award.

“The Outstanding Faculty Excellence Award recognizes superior performance and achievement of ATMAE members from two-year institutions and ATMAE members from four-year institutions and is intended to epitomize those who have a demonstrated record of excellence and achievement in their profession,” said Dr. Paul Roberts, College of Business and Technology associate dean.

Miller has been responsible for growing both the industrial technology and industrial management programs at UT Tyler, establishing a new lean six sigma black belt certification for the department and publishing numerous textbooks in his discipline.

Under his leadership, the department also doubled the number of ATMAE certifications with the introduction of three new exams that he developed and/or coordinated. Miller also prepared the UT Tyler’s industrial technology program’s reaccreditation self-study report that had all 63 standards in full compliance.
