The University of Texas at Tyler has opened a new tutoring center to further enhance student success in the classroom, Dr. Alisa White, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, announced.

Located in University Center, room 3114, the UT Tyler Patriot Academic Success Services Tutoring Center offers tutoring services in several 1000- and 2000-level courses that are among those UT Tyler students traditionally consider the most difficult.

“We have been considering opening a tutoring center for a number of years and finally made it a reality this fall,” said Dana Welch, UT Tyler Department of Academic Success director. “These courses typically have high percentages of failure and withdrawal rates, so we anticipate that providing academic support will not only decrease those percentages but will also improve the success rates for students who take advantage of these support services.”

Supported courses for the fall 2013 semester at the PASS Center are:

  • ACCT 2301 & 2302
  • BIOL 1306/1106; 2301/2101; 2320/2120
  • CHEM 1305/1105; 1311/1111
  • ECON 1301, 2301 & 2302
  • ENGR 2301
  • HIST 1301 & 1302
  • PHYS 2325/2125; 2326/2126
  • POLS 2305 & 2306

The PASS tutoring staff consists of peer tutors who have already been successful in the course or courses they support.

“Tutors come highly recommended by UT Tyler faculty and will be trained using national standards and best practice principles recognized by professional tutoring organizations,” Welch added.

PASS Tutoring Center hours are noon – 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4 – 8 p.m. Sunday and by special appointment.

Online tutoring also is available for select subjects.

An open house for the UT Tyler PASS Tutoring Center will be announced.
