The University of Texas at Tyler celebrated a significant milestone in its history with an enrollment of 7,534 for fall 2013, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.

Last year at this time the total headcount was 6,875.

“This is a celebratory moment for UT Tyler. We knew we were going to reach 7,000 this fall, but blowing right past that goal while also raising the quality of our students was very exciting. This nine percent increase once again places us among the top one or two fastest growing universities in Texas. I am so proud of our faculty and staff who continue to make UT Tyler a special place for students to feel comfortable and be successful, while giving students one of the strongest educations available in our state.” President Mabry said.

The increase in undergraduate enrollment is attributed to the expansion of programs on campus, special attention to quality teaching by our faculty, higher retention rates and continuing success recruiting regionally in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston areas. There was a jump in graduate and international student enrollments as well. The launching of UT Tyler’s new Engineering Center in Houston added 50 students as well.

The UT Tyler Houston Engineering Center, located on the Houston Community College Alief Campus, is a partnership with HCC and San Jacinto Community Colleges that allows students to earn an accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering in a 2 + 2 format.

This innovative program offers a seamless pathway to a four-year degree in mechanical, electrical or civil engineering at about half the cost of attending one of the better known programs in the state.

Students earn an associate of science in engineering sciences degree at HCC, or another community college offering the ASES degree, and then transfer to the UT Tyler Houston Engineering Center or our Tyler campus to earn a bachelor of science degree.

The graduate increase reflects a substantial rise in international enrollment that is the result of a targeted recruitment campaign. Current international graduate students also aided the recruitment with positive “word-of-mouth” testimonials to potential students in their respective countries.

The UT Tyler Graduate School is offering 111 online courses this fall, and enrollment for these courses has increased as students continue to take advantage of the flexibility they provide. Responding to students’ needs, The UT Tyler Graduate School launched several new online programs this year, including a master of arts in English, master of education in reading, master of education in special education and the post-baccalaureate teacher certification program, STEP. All of the coursework can be completed online.

“The biggest factor in UT Tyler’s overall enrollment increase is the retention work of everyone on campus. Initial data reflect students returning at a greater rate than seen in previous years. Students recognize something very special is happening at UT Tyler,” Mabry added.

One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. More than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 7,500 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
